Rick Smith, Esq.
Rick is a husband and father, artist, lover of outdoors, teacher and attorney. Rick and his wife and five kids have collectively lived in six different states and two foreign countries (Indiana, Texas, Kansas, Utah, Ohio, Missouri, England and Hong Kong). They came to Topeka for Rick’s law school experience and eventually decided to make it their home.
Rick has handled a range of practice areas including contracts, wills, trusts, probate, trademark, copyright, business, civil litigation, and adoption. Before joining Mack & Associates, Rick drafted estate planning documents for a small law firm and worked on a legal team for a nationwide company doing business planning and asset management. Since joining Mack & Associates in 2018, Rick has said he particularly enjoys adoption, special needs guardianship and trademark law.
In his first semester of law school, Rick was the highest scoring student in his legal research and writing course section. In his second year, he received two coveted awards, one of which took him to Washington, D.C., where he met U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Elena Kagan, and visited the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, Virginia. Rick took a wide range of courses during law school with an emphasis on trademark, copyright, patent, and trade secret. He was a leader and member of several student organizations including the Washburn University School of Law student-chapters of the Intellectual Property Law Society and the J. Reuben Clark Law Society.
Prior to law school, Rick studied art and interpersonal/small group communication at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. During college, Rick taught high-school-age youth in a religious seminary and worked with youth at inspirational summer camps. His art won several awards, including a prize-winning piece of historic Brooklyn, New York, that hangs in his Topeka law office.
Outside of work, Rick enjoys doing everything he can with his wife and children, especially outdoor activities and creative family projects—such as planning and cultivating their vegetable garden. Rick and his wife both play violin and piano.
